What live painting at a wedding is
A watercolor artist, me in this case, sets up an easel at your reception and paints guests throughout the evening. Not a single canvas of the venue. Not portraits with faces. At Aquarelle & Gabrielle, Gabrielle paints guests’ outfits and silhouettes, individually or as couples. One individual portrait per guest is not guaranteed; completed pieces are collected at her table during the evening.
It sits closer to a personalized keepsake than to traditional wedding art. What makes it different is that guests watch it being made.
How the evening unfolds
I arrive about an hour before guests to set up my easel, paints and display board in a visible corner. Cocktail hour or the transition into dinner is usually the best window.
The sequence goes like this:
- Guests notice the easel and come over out of curiosity
- I take a quick reference photo of each person: their outfit, posture, a detail of the fabric
- I paint from my easel while guests circulate around me
- Finished 5×7s go up on the display board so guests can check back throughout the night
- Each completed watercolor goes home with its owner before the evening ends, in a protective sleeve
